The new body of work titled Taking Care consists of intimately scaled, laser-carved cardboard paintings of a still life image. Each painting has an intricately detailed surface, made by the digital optical tool of a laser machine, on top of a gesso ground. Within this conceptual process, I open up the possibilities of exploring a pictorial world. In these 2-dimensional works, I combine drawing, photography, and painting with digital techniques and a laser machine application, to burn a digital image onto the surface of a substrate. I allow for imperfections to creep into an otherwise precise technology of reproduction as the breakdown of material by hand and machine imparts uniqueness and difference in the work. Glitches and slippages occur in the process, to reveal fragility and vulnerability of the substrate material.
