Conversations In Practice, Ox-Bow School of Art & Artist’s Residency

Conversations In Practice, conducted by Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency is a virtual program that brings together small groups of interdisciplinary artists to facilitate studio progress through critical discussion.

I had the pleasure of participating in this virtual residency, led by the artist Alivia Zivich. Each week, I met with the cohort of artists via Zoom, sharing ideas and work and conversation.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, coffee in hand, peering outside the dimly lit courtyard from my home office, I would open up my computer and be greeted with a group of my artist-colleages, none of whom I had met in person, but in the 4 weeks of late winter 2022 that we spent discussing and engaging in each other’s works, it was as though the distance apart did not matter at all. The most significant facet of the program is the structured critiques based on Liz Lerman’s process offered. ‘Towards a Process for Critical Response’ is a step by step approach to a group critique. Below is a link to the critique process. If I had known this in art school, it would have saved me the anxiety I harbored within during every critique session.
